Crochet dreads
🌿A timeless style with character — strong, natural, and truly yours
These kanekalon crochet dreadlocks have a firm structure, are comfortable to wear, and are perfect for those who love a more bold, character-rich look
What makes crochet dreads so special?
- Made from synthetic kanekalon
- SE (single ended) or DE (double ended)
- Reusable
- Suitable for hair from 10 cm
- Dread thickness: up to ± 1 cm
Can be worn as:
- a full set
- partial / peekaboo
- an accent
- part of a mix (for example with curls or thin dreads)
- a ponytail or clip-ins
The thin dreads are handcrafted, firmly crocheted, and become softer and more natural over time while wearing them
Colors, lengths & texture
Colors & accents
There’s a wide range of standard colors available.
Because all crochet dreadlocks are handmade, colors can be mixed and matched to suit your style.
Soft transitions, blended combinations, or subtle accents — everything is created in balance with the whole.
Length
Crochet dreadlocks can be made from approximately 15–17 cm in length.
Texture of the crochet dreads
I make two different types of crochet dreadlocks.
They differ in texture, but beautifully complement each other within one set.
- The first type has an airy, slightly rough texture.
These dreads stay more fluffy, have more shape, and create a playful, natural look.
- The second type is smoother and more compact.
While wearing them, they become more lively over time but keep a tighter base.
Both types are flexible and comfortable to wear.
By combining them, you create balance, movement, and a vibrant, natural appearance.
Attachment
For crochet dreadlocks, I work with two attachment methods:
1. Half-eight / blanket method
2. Scandinavian technique
Which method we use depends on your hair, your wishes, and what feels and looks best for you. We’ll decide this together during your appointment.
- Your natural hair is carefully braided around the crochet dreadlocks
- The attachment is secured with elastics or thread
- Wearing time: up to 1.5–2 months
- After that, it’s time to (have them) removed and give your hair a short beauty break
- Afterwards, the dreads can be reinstalled again
Just like with other dreadlock styles, your own hair stays protected — as long as the recommended wearing time is respected 🤍
How many crochet dreads do you need?
Full head – DE dreads
± 60 DE dreads (≈ 120 ends)
Full head – Mix of DE + SE
± 20–30 SE
± 30–40 DE (≈ 90–100 ends in total)
Undercut / Partial / Peekaboo
± 20–30 SE or DE
Not looking for a full set?
Crochet dreadlocks don’t have to be worn as a full head to look beautiful.
They also work perfectly as accents, or mixed with thin dreads, curls or braids — in a partial set or as part of a full mix.
SE vs DE — what’s the difference?
DE (Double Ended)
- 2 ends
- Attached in the middle
- More volume
- Slightly heavier
- Thicker in a ponytail
SE (Single Ends)
- 1 end
- With loop: easy to braid in yourself
- Lighter to wear
- Looks more natural
- Slimmer in a ponytail
Crochet Dread Care
Minimal care
- Sleep with a satin bonnet
- Showering? Put your hair in a bun, braid or ponytail — or use a shower cap
- Light pulling or pressure at the beginning is normal — give yourself a little time to adjust
Washing
Scalp — yes
Dreads — not necessary
They get clean naturally while washing your scalp.
Your own hair is neatly braided around the dread and stays protected.
Wash no more than once every 7–10 days
(less often if you have a dry scalp).
The more often you wash, the faster loose hairs can frizz and the dreads may loosen.
How to wash:
- Use a bottle with a nozzle or a sponge to easily reach each parting
- No bottle? A small bowl + sponge works just fine
- Wash your scalp twice in a row
- Put a mild shampoo in the bottle (the amount you’d normally use for one wash) and dilute it with water
- Distribute over the scalp and gently massage with your fingers
- Rinse thoroughly and move the dreads from back to front so all shampoo is removed
- Don’t scrub or rub harshly — let the water do the work to avoid frizz
- Gently squeeze the dreads, wrap them in a towel
- Let them air-dry (about 3–5 hours)
Important:
Never go to bed with wet hair. Your hair and extensions won’t dry properly and may start to smell.
❌ Do not use:
- Conditioner
- Hair masks
- Styling products
- Hair dryer
✔ Do use:
- A satin bonnet
