Thin dreads and braids

🌿 Light, flexible, and surprisingly versatile

These synthetic kanekalon strands are safe for your hair, comfortable to wear, and perfect for both beginners and experienced dread wearers

What makes thin dreads special?

  • Made from synthetic kanekalon
  • Available as SE (single) or DE (double)
  • Reusable
  • Suitable for hair from 10 cm
  • Thickness of the dreads: up to ± 0.5 cm (braids can be slightly thicker)

They can be used as:
  • a full set
  • partial / peekaboo
  • accent pieces
  • part of a mix (for example combined with curls or crochet dreads)
  • ponytail or clip-ins

Thin dreads are handcrafted, tightly twisted, and become softer and more natural-looking the longer you wear them

Colors & Lengths

At Julia’s Dread Shop you’ll find thin dreads and braids in different lengths and a wide color palette.
Some sets are ready to ship, while others are fully custom-made by me.

Installation

I use two installation methods:

  1. Half-eight / blanket method
  2. Scandinavian technique

Depending on your hair and your preference, we’ll choose the best option during your appointment

  • Your natural hair is braided around the dreads
  • Installed with small elastics or thread
  • Wear time: up to 2 months
  • After that: removal, a little beauty break, and then you can have them reinstalled

How many dreads / braids do you need?

Full head – DE dreads
± 60 DE (≈ 120 ends)

Full head – Mix of DE + SE
± 20–30 SE
± 40–30 DE (≈ 90–100 ends
in total)

Under-cut / Partial / Peekaboo

Partial dreads

SE vs DE – What’s the difference?

Care

Minimal Care

  • Sleep with a satin bonnet
  • Shower? Make a bun, braid, or ponytail, or use a shower cap
  • Light pulling or pressure at first is normal — give yourself some time to get used to it

Washing

Scalp – yes
Dreads – not necessary

You only wash your scalp, not the dreads themselves.
Wash no more than once every 7–10 days (less often if you have a dry scalp)

How to wash:
  • Use a bottle with a nozzle or a sponge
  • Mild shampoo + water
  • Wash twice
  • Gently squeeze the dreads, wrap in a towel
  • Air dry (3–5 hours)
  • Do not sleep with wet hair

Do not use:
  • Conditioner
  • Hair masks
  • Styling products
  • Hairdryer

Do use:
  • Satin bonnet
